Students can apply for the position of Student Government comptroller starting midnight tonight.
The application process will end April 28 at noon, according to an executive order signed by SG President Nate Bronstein. A decision will be made by April 29 at midnight.
Comptroller-elect Taylor Yeates announced yesterday that he would not be the Student Government comptroller next year due to personal reasons. Yeates could not be reached for comment.
Bronstein and Acting Speaker of the Undergraduate Senate Brett Atanasio issued a joint order for a state of exception, allowing Bronstein to appoint a new comptroller. It is the only method available in the SG bylaws for changes to the incoming administration’s executive cabinet this close to transition on May 1.
The Undergraduate Senate will meet April 25 to vote on whether to approve or terminate the state of exception, Atanasio said. Under university policy, the Senate cannot convene after Monday because classes will have ended, according to SG Communications Director Morgan Gress.
Bronstein must make a decision before May 1 due to time constraints.
“We just don’t want the next administration to go on without a comptroller,” he said.
Tim McBride, the SG president-elect, said he will not make the final decision for the next comptroller, but he is involved in the process.
“We’ll absolutely be conferring with Nate, and he’ll be conferring with us,” McBride said.
The comptroller needs to be on campus over the summer to sign off on financial documents for the SG, according to outgoing Comptroller Ed Levandoski.
Former Speaker of the Undergraduate Senate Eric Reath has taken a leave of absence to apply for the now vacant position, citing the need to avoid a conflict of interest. The SG president and Undergraduate Senate speaker must to agree on the need for a state of exception.
Previous Speaker Pro Tempore Brett Atanasio, a senator for the Class of 2013, took over as acting speaker April 23.
Applicants interested in the comptroller position can send resumes and cover letters to president@ausg.org, according to SG Secretary Kent Hiebel.
