GOP 'Young Guns' cancel Wednesday KPU appearance due to votes

The “Young Guns” have canceled tonight’s speaking engagement with the Kennedy Political Union.

KPU Director Josh Levitt hopes to reschedule it for later this semester.

Reps. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., were contracted to speak about their book, “Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders” in Ward 1 at 7 p.m. tonight. But they must miss the event in order to be present for a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The vote had originally been scheduled to take place next week.

Levitt received a call at 8:30 this morning from Brad Dayspring, the media adviser for the Young Guns, who said the congressmen found out today that the vote was rescheduled to take place in the House of Representatives this evening.

At 12:20, Dayspring called again to confirm the cancellation of tonight’s event.

Levitt originally contacted the Young Guns in July with the idea to hold this event, and contracts for the event were signed in early September, he said.

“When dealing with public officials, you always have to be aware that things will come up, things will change,” Levitt said. “Obviously, that’s a risk that you run.”

KPU scheduled the event, and AU College Republicans, the Roosevelt Institute and the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies were cosponsors of the event.

Levitt said that he is hopeful the event can take place sometime later in the semester.

“I’m confident that we will be able to reschedule for sometime in the near future,” he said.
