Over 15 AU College Democrats attended a 2010 Midterm Elections Kickoff Rally at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in downtown D.C. on Thursday, where they heard from Democratic officials and congressional representatives about engaging voters for the upcoming elections.
About 100 College Democrats from colleges across D.C. attended the event, according to AU College Democrats member and former president, Luke Falcon Sapp.
The students heard from Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Mitch Stewart, Executive Director for Organizing for America, according to a press release for the event. Organizing for America is a project within the Democratic National Committee aimed at getting people to support Obama’s legislative agenda.
They also heard from Rep. Frank Kratovil, D-Md., Rep Mike Honda, D-Calif., and Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Va., who spoke at a College Democrats-sponsored event at AU earlier this week, The Eagle previously reported.
Falcon Sapp said Van Hollen was an engaging speaker who gave the College Democrats extensive advice on how to get youth voters excited about the upcoming midterm elections.
Stewart’s speech was especially interesting, Falcon Sapp said, because of his long history with Obama. He helped organize Obama’s field campaigns in various states throughout the election, and he was appointed the head of Organizing for America in 2009.
Falcon Sapp was glad to see a lot of enthusiasm and support for the Democratic Party at the rally.
“It was very uplifting,” he said. “It just made you want to get out there and start canvassing. I’m pumped up for the [midterm] election.”
