SG president allows oversight

Student Government executives must provide information on nominees for cabinet positions to the Undergraduate Senate, according to an executive order issued Sept. 11 by President Andy MacCracken.

The order stems from MacCracken’s veto of a Senate oversight bill, the so-called “Ballast Bill,” on Sept. 4. The bill would have allowed senators to request applications of any nominee up for confirmation by the Senate.

According to the executive order, the executive making the appointment will submit a summary memo of why the candidate was nominated to the Senate. The summary will include information from the applicant’s interview, résumé and application.

Any senator may also request a hard copy of the nominee’s written application. Private information such as AUID, address and GPA will be omitted.

Senators must request the information three days in advance, although the executives are encouraged to prepare the information even if it is not requested, according to the order.

MacCracken said he vetoed the Ballast Bill and then issued a similar executive order because he felt the bill had been rushed through the Senate.

“I didn’t want to support something that needed more time and could do a lot more in its scope,” he said. “I issued the executive order because I do believe in what the bill was trying to achieve.”

MacCracken said the executive order will serve as a temporary measure until the senate could pass a bigger oversight bill.
