Metro brief

Track maintenance slows red line trains

Red line Metro trains will run slower between the Tenleytown-AU and Van Ness-UDC stops and the Dupont Circle and Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan stops after parts of the track failed to meet standards.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority raised the standards for track circuit performance after the June 22 accident between Ft. Totten and Takoma stations. The accident killed nine people and injured 70.

Track circuits allow a train controller in Metro’s control center to see where a train is located. The circuits may be turned off to make repairs, but the train controller will still be able to see where a train is and will have radio contact with the train operator, according to WMATA’s Web site.

Circuit maintenance will also take place between the Ballston-MU and East Falls Church stations on the Orange Line and the Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom-GWU stations on the Orange and Blue Line. For more information on circuit maintenance, visit www.wmata.com/about_metro/track_circuit.cfm?.
