Showers leave students cold

South side having hot water issues

Some Centennial and Anderson Hall residents have been left out in the cold when it comes to taking a hot shower.

Many South side residents have reported that when they go to take a shower hot water is often not available.

Anna Sito, a sophomore in the School of International Service, said that for the last week and a half she has gotten either lukewarm or cold water in her Centennial shower.

"It gets to the point where it's not freezing, and you can tell that it's kind of warm, but you just wish it would get hotter," she said.

While some Centennial and Anderson Hall residents have complained of not having hot water, others said that shower temperatures have not significantly deviated from the norm. Assistant Director of Facilities Operations Holly Mussatti said in an e-mail that Centennial experienced difficulties this semester with building hot water.

"There were several repairs on the heating system made recently," she said in the e-mail. "Our technicians responded and discovered a circulating pump that was malfunctioning."

Mussatti said one incident in mid-January led to the water heating problems, but that the problem should be fixed.

"I am aware of only one unscheduled issue that caused difficulty with the hot water in both Centennial and Anderson," Mussatti said in the e-mail. "During the long Inauguration weekend, the central plant boilers experienced a mechanical problem for several hours on Jan. 17th. As a result, steam production was insufficient to meet the demand for a short period of time."

Regardless of what is causing the lack of hot water, Centennial and Anderson Hall residents have noticed there is a definite water temperature problem.

"I have noticed [the colder water temperature]," said Katie Ryan, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences who lives in Anderson. "For example, coming back from the Inauguration, it was rather chilly. I took a cold shower and that was upsetting."

Mussatti said the problem was repaired quickly, restoring full heat and hot water to the two dorms.

Dan Bakst, a Centennial resident and sophomore in Kogod, said he has not noticed a difference in his shower temperature.

"I guess it just depends on what time you shower," he said. "I think it doesn't really affect people who shower at odd times ... [the water temperature] has been fine for the most part."

Students who think their shower has insufficient hot water are encouraged to call 2FIX, according to Mussatti.
