Police blotter

Jan. 13

A student in Letts Hall briefly lost consciousness while exercising on a rowing machine. When he regained consciousness, he indicated he was dizzy and his head hurt. He declined medical attention. He signed a medical refusal form.

A shuttle bus operator noticed an unresponsive individual lying on the front seat of an AU shuttle. The D.C. Fire Department transported the unresponsive individual to Sibley Hospital.

DCFD, Facilities Management and Public Safety responded to a stuck elevator in Letts. The individual was released from the elevator and indicated he did not need any medical attention. No injuries were reported.

Jan. 14

Two vehicles backed into each other outside of the Osborn Building. Neither party was injured.

Jan. 15

Public Safety responded to a fire alarm in the Asbury Building and found no evidence of smoke or fire. Facilities Management staff reported a malfunction due to a smoke detector in a room.

A student in Hughes Hall reported receiving numerous phone calls beginning Dec. 15, 2008. The calls originated from three telephone numbers that she does not recognize. When she answered the calls, there were no replies. During the last call, she indicated she would be contacting Public Safety. The calls stopped.

Jan. 16

A resident assistant in Leonard Hall reported a smell of marijuana. Public Safety responded. Several students and a visitor were occupying a room and stated they were smoking marijuana. A marijuana joint was on a table in plain view. Public Safety placed the marijuana in a property and evidence bag. The visitor was barred from AU property and escorted off campus. Housing and Dining will be referring the incident to JAMS.

A Financial Aid employee reported having an unpleasant phone conversation with a student's parent who was upset over an outstanding account balance. Near the end of the conversation, the parent stated something to the effect of, "You do not want me to come to the university - there is no telling what I am going to do."

A bicycle was stolen from a rack in front of the Congressional Hall. It had been secured with a bike lock.

Jan. 17

A resident director in Anderson Hall reported an intoxicated student in a restroom. The student indicated she began drinking at an off-campus location at approximately 11 p.m. The student appeared to be slightly intoxicated but conscious and oriented to the time and place. The student refused medical assistance and signed a medical refusal form.

A student at the Tenleytown-AU Metrorail station reported his guest was ill and needed to go to a hospital. The guest indicated he was experiencing pain and complications from a virus. DCFD and Emergency Medical Services transported the guest and the student to Sibley Hospital.

A suspect in Leonard Hall, who had no known university affiliation, produced someone else's identification card when officials from Housing and Dining asked the suspect to produce one. On another occasion, when asked to produce ID, the suspect hid behind friends and continued to an elevator and to an upper floor. Public Safety found the suspect with a resident in the resident's room. The suspect appeared slightly intoxicated. Public Safety barred the suspect from university property and confiscated his car keys due to his condition. Public Safety also escorted the suspect home when a cab company refused to do so. An RD responded to the scene and indicated he would be referring the resident student to JAMS for assisting the suspect in violating the Access Control Policy, entering the residential hall unlawfully and concealing the suspect in her room during the initial search by Public Safety and Housing and Dining staff.

A fire alarm in the Asbury Building activated and indicated the cause was a smoke detector in a boiler room. The building was evacuated. No smoke or fire was found. Facilities Management indicated a fan core problem caused the fire panel to go into alarm. Facilities Management partially disabled the alarm. Facilities Management and Public Safety authorized people to reenter the building. DCFD was not notified.

A fire alarm activated in Mary Graydon Center. A constant flow of water was noticed, which originated from pipes on the building's sub-terrace level. Occupants evacuated the building. Facilities Management personnel indicated a sprinkler valve line froze and ruptured. FM turned off the main water valve. The alarm panel was unable to be reset. Students and personnel could reenter the building. DCFD was not notified.

A student reported noticing her AU ID missing from her jacket pocket which she had placed on the back of a chair in an off-campus restaurant. She then discovered a fraudulent charge was made to her EagleBuck$ account. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to file a report.

Jan. 18

While posted at a Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity party in MGC, Public Safety responded to a report of an unconscious individual in a restroom. Officers found the sick person semiconscious and incoherent. A DCFD ambulance transported the sick person to Sibley Hospital.

A Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity party in MGC quickly exceeded expected attendance, became overcrowded and exceeded capacity. A crowd outside the Tavern doors began to surge and push forward toward the entrance doors. Officials decided to restrict further entry into the building and to disperse the crowd. Patrons were angry that they could not enter the event. MPD responded to assist Public Safety with crowd control. Individuals continued to enter by forcing their way toward doors and climbing in through windows. At least three fights broke out. Public Safety intervened in one fight by restraining and having the two combatants placed in handcuffs. OC spray was utilized to break up a second fight. Individuals fled from the area. At approximately 1:10 a.m., the fire alarm activated due to a malfunctioning sprinkler alarm. This helped with the ongoing evacuation of the building. The two detained combatants were later released by MPD. A Public Safety officer suffered a knee injury from being pushed into a wall. Facilities Management was notified in reference to the fire alarm. Aramark was notified in reference to the damage and mess created by the incident.

Facilities Management reported a malfunctioning motor in an elevator room caused a fire in MGC. The fire alarm activated. Facilities Management put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. The building was evacuated. DCFD responded. No injuries were reported. The alarm panel was reset.

The fire alarm system in Letts activated. The alarm was triggered in the lower level mailroom. Public Safety noticed water coming from a sprinkler in the ceiling of the mailroom. Facilities Management and DCFD responded. Water caused damage to several crates inside the room. Facilities Management shut off the water flow. Aramark was notified to clean up the damage. Officials took photographs of the scene.

Athletics and Recreation staff reported vandalism to a display board inside the Sports Center and the possible theft of a 1933 award plaque from a wall directly in front of a break room. Cream and sugar were scattered on the floor of the break room. Officials took photographs of the scene.

Jan. 19

A student in Leonard Hall reported nausea, vomiting, weakness, stomach and head pains and diarrhea. The student requested transport to a hospital. The student believed it was caused by something he ate. DCFD transported him to Sibley.

Jan. 20

DPS responded to a fire alarm activated by a smoke detector on the third floor of the Katzen Arts Center. No smoke or fire was found. The gallery was described as being muggy and hot. Facilities Management was initially unable to reset the fire alarm panel due to a system malfunction.
