International brief

Business as usual in Mumbai

Schools and offices in Mumbai (Bombay), India, reopened Monday following violent attacks on sites in the city between Nov. 26 and 29.

Gunmen armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades attacked specific locations, including the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, a Jewish center, a railway station and a hospital for women and children, National Public Radio reported.

The coordinated attacks killed 172 people - including six Americans - and injured 239, according to ABC News.

An organization called Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks in an e-mail sent to Indian media organizations, ABC News reported.

U.S officials told The Washington Post that the United States warned India about a Pakistan-based plot to attack Mumbai's waterfront.
