Smithsonian considers new funding options

A group of more than 400 people booed at the Smithsonian Institution governing board's first open meeting in 162 years after an audience member suggested the institutions begin charging admissions, the Associated Press reported.

Officials told the AP they are searching for new funding options to combat the $2.5 billion maintenance backlog at the 19 museums, the National Zoo and research centers. Congress currently provides 70 percent of their funds but has increased pressure for the museum's "self-reliance" in light of the economic crisis.

Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., said at Monday's meeting that he would fight "tooth and nail" against any effort to charge the public, the AP reported.
