Cozy up with affordable comfort food

Coppi's, Pasta Mia's hot treats

It is that time of year again. Brisk air, warm blankets, hot cocoa and snuggling followed by turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and Black Friday. I know it well. Not only is it Thanksgiving, but it is also my birthday, my mom's birthday, my grandma's birthday and Christmas. I love this time of year, obviously.

Though break-up season is right around the corner, it is the time for love to be bought and for love to be shared. How could you not want to find a cozy place next to a fire with warm tea or coffee talking to your friends from home about your lives since the summer? Wow, can you believe that just a few mere months ago it was summertime and you were prepping to come back to AU? Can you honestly believe it is almost the end of the semester? Life. I can't believe it.

'Tis the season and I have the two perfect spots to be romantic before you depart from your sweetie for Thanksgiving break. Believe me though; you absolutely need a break and have to check these places out. You deserve it! All of this stress from end of semester and holiday gift shopping; please go out to dinner already. Also, a friend does suggest that a huge aphrodisiac is going outside and making snow angels together.

An AU professor recommended Coppi's to me. She recommended I try Coppi's to eat the perfectly baked luscious nutella calzone. Obviously I was there in a heartbeat. What could be more delectable than a nutella calzone? Not much. Even more so, DTD and EcoSense showcased Coppi's at Project Greenway for their eco-friendly practices. It was obviously a must-go.

As I arrived at the tucked away restaurant on U Street, I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere when I walked inside. My roommate and I instantly were reminded of home and both thought, wow this would be a great date idea for the column. The mood lighting, the candles, the warmth and the delicious organic food was more than I had hoped. The bread was also heaven in my mouth.

If you share a medium margarita pizza ($15.95) and a nutella calzone ($6.95) you will be satisfied. I couldn't have been happier with the service and I cannot stress the overwhelming feeling of homey-ness. Coppi's is a perfect place for you to bring your family or just anyone you love.

That same week, my roommate and I tried out another wonderful Italian joint. She has commented that Pasta Mia is located along a strip of D.C.'s hottest nightlife, but this Adams Morgan joint will remind you only of home.

From the checkered tablecloths to the unlimited supply of bread, you'll feel at ease as soon as you enter. Be forewarned: cash is the only accepted form of payment and each individual is required a $14 minimum purchase. Luckily, the portions are huge, the Bolognese sauce is delicious, and literally everything is homemade.

Pasta Mia opens at 6:30 p.m., but a line starts forming around 6 p.m. Try to get there around then to be sure you get in for the first seating instead of waiting around in the cold for the few tables to empty up. Your taste buds will thank you.

As stated above, I can't believe time has passed so rapidly. Please send your final thoughts to mia.libido@gmail.com or drop your comments off at the Eagle office, MGC 252. Much love and be safe.
