Union Station celebrated its 100th anniversary Thursday and commemorated the occasion over the weekend with a series of free public events.
These events included an exhibit of historic locomotives and passenger cars in addition to modern Amtrak equipment. Visitors were able to walk through the cars and purchase souvenir stamps inside the post office car, the Associated Press reported.
Daniel Burnham, the station's architect and the principal architect for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, intended the station to be "a monumental gateway to Washington," Dwight Young, senior communications associate at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, told the AP.
The station remains one of the most frequented public buildings in D.C., according to the AP.
