National brief

Galveston uninhabitable for another week

Though Hurricane Ike ravaged the Texas coast nearly a week ago, some areas of the state, such as Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula, are not yet accessible to residents, according to The Washington Post.

"By staying away and being patient, you are making it possible for us to get you home in a week or so, instead of the months it would take if the city's infrastructure were more overwhelmed at this point," Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas told the Associated Press.

Galveston's 45,000 residents are among 1 million Texas evacuees. Approximately 22,000 people are still living in more than 200 shelters across the state, according to the AP.
