INAUGURATION WEEK: Calendar of events

Monday, Feb. 4 Scholarship, Creativity and Professional Contributions Day

Panel Presentation - "Ideas into Action: Faculty Share Their Professional Experiences" 1 p.m. WHERE: MGC 5 INFO: Washington College of Law Dean Claudio Grossman, College of Arts and Sciences professor Caleen Jennings, CAS professor Robert Jernigan, WCL professor Jamin Raskin and AU President Neil Kerwin will discuss academia as public intellectuals. Faculty participants will represent individual topics - human rights, the arts, the environment, domestic affairs and electoral politics.

Discussion/Presentation - "Sound Investments: How Music Shapes our Lives" 4:30 p.m. WHERE: Kogod School of Business, room 118 INFO: Distinguished Visiting Artist Leonard Slatkin, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Chairman Emeritus James Wolfensohn, Kogod senior Associate Dean Kathleen Getz and Epic Records Executive Vice President Andy Gershon will participate in this event. A private reception, to start at 3:30 p.m. in the Harris Lounge, will precede the program.

Arts Festival 6 p.m. WHERE: Katzen Arts Center INFO: More than 200 students will perform in the building's rotunda and hallways. Students in Mission: Improv-able, AU Players, On a Sensual Note, Rude Mechanicals and AU Bhangra will perform. Students from the art department and the School of Communication will exhibit their work in the hallways. Students from the literature department will present a "Poetry Pit" in the Katzen Café. Graduate students in the art department will share their works in studios on the second floor.

Honors Alumni Panel 6 p.m. WHERE: MGC 200 INFO: Members of the AU Honors Advisory Council will give their perspectives on how the AU Honors experience can influence your future.

Dept. of Performing Arts and Dept. of Literature Student Showcase 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Katzen Rotunda INFO: This showcase will feature student work in arts, dance, literature, management, music, musical theater and theater. The showcase will begin with "Fanfare on K-E-R-W-I-N," an original brass composition by Dean of Academic Affairs Haig Mardirosian and "We are the Artists/Managers," a short play by Caleen Jennings.

Tuesday, Feb. 5 Teaching/Learning Day

Scholars as Great Teachers - Luncheon Discussion Noon WHERE: MGC 4, 5 and 6 INFO: School of Communication professor Patricia Aufderheide, College of Arts and Sciences professor Caleen Jennings, School of International Service professor John Richardson, School of Public Affairs professor Jim Thurber and AU President Neil Kerwin will participate in the discussion.

All Day Events INFO: There will be displays on video monitors in university buildings. There will also interactive "post-it" displays in MGC for students to post about their best classroom experiences, favorite teachers and other anecdotes. Wednesday, Feb. 6 Action into Service Day

Breakfast to Celebrate AU's Involvement with the D.C. Public Schools 8:30 a.m. WHERE: MGC 4, 5 and 6 INFO: D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee will speak at this invitation-only breakfast for education leaders, school officials and those involved in AU's outreach to D.C. public schools.

Lunch/Discussion - "The 2008 Presidential Election: Post Super Tuesday Analysis and Predictions" Noon WHERE: MGC 5 INFO: Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies Director James Thurber, Public Opinion Strategies co-founder Glen Bolger, SPA professor Candice Nelson and SOC professor Dotty Lynch will participate in this discussion. The lunch will begin at noon, while the discussion will begin at 12:20 p.m.

Dessert Reception 7:30 p.m. WHERE: MGC INFO: Ann Kerwin will host a dessert reception to thank students, faculty and staff who volunteered to work with D.C. schools. There will be a musical performance by third grade students from J.C. Nalle Elementary School. Admission to this event is by invitation only.

AU and D.C. Schools/Volunteer Showcase All day WHERE: MGC lobby INFO: Photos, displays and projects involving D.C. schools will be available for viewing.
