Women's basketball loses on Hoya turf

The women's basketball team fell short to their local rival Georgetown on Friday, losing 67-52.

In the first half, like a game of tug-of-war, the Eagles and the Hoyas battled for possession of the game, but neither team could shake off the other. When the Eagles had the lead, Georgetown would quickly make a run and take that lead over.

Seniors Liz Hayes and Stephanie N'Garsanet stood out in the first half of play. Together, these Eagle teammates led with most points scored in the first half, with 10 and nine points respectively. However, these points would prove to be of little help. When the halftime whistle was blown, Georgetown was winning 32-29.

Things were looking bright for the Eagles as they entered the gym at the beginning of the second half. Six minutes into play, the Eagles continued with confidence and shortened Georgetown's lead to one point.

Nevertheless, the Hoyas, who have won their last seven decisions against the Eagles, quickly turned the game around as they went on a 12-0 run. At times, Georgetown led the game by 18 points.

The Hoyas made certain that their lead never faltered thanks in part to a daunting defense that shut down Eagle offensive powers Hayes and Talicia Jackson. However, the Eagles did not give up easily.

AU made a comeback when freshmen Michelle Kirk and Liz Leer scored nine of the 11 points during an 11-2 run, bringing Georgetown's lead within nine. The run was too late, though, as the Hoyas held off any other Eagle attack and finished the game with a 15-point advantage.

In the end, it all came down to free throws and rebounding. Georgetown dominated, out-rebounding AU 42-30. The Hoyas also shot 70 percent from the free throw line. The Eagles are now 1-2 on the season and hope to break away from their two game skid when they play Wagner today.
