Letter to the editor: SG committed to diversity

Reading this Monday's editorial, "SG Diversity Discussion," we could not help but be disheartened. The editorial gave the impression that the Student Government has done nothing to address the issue of diversity. On the contrary, we have started the conversation about how to address this important issue. Right now, our campus only tolerates diversity, but we should be celebrating it. It will take more than one organization to accomplish a culture change, but the SG is making an honest and extensive effort to inspire a community response to change.

The Student Government has created a Diversity Action Team to coordinate our efforts to embrace every aspect of our community. Jenny Leland, a freshman, has joined the team as our disability advocate, leading the charge for an audible device to assist blind students at the stoplight between Katzen and Glover Gate. Carrie Johnson, a junior, is the multicultural advocate. She has done a great job provoking discussion about diversity and inclusion in the SG and campus at large. We will soon have a GLBT advocate, addressing issues such as gender-neutral bathrooms and floors.

We have advertised the recent executive vacancies through the director of the Honors program, the GLBTA Resource Center, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and through Greek Life. We have publicized the openings on our Web site, through posters, the Daily Jolt, Facebook and through the SG e-mail, which goes to every undergraduate student. The recent Diversity Discussion was publicized through the same means. We are committed to enlisting leaders with new perspectives and different views.

The SG works hard to represent the needs of all our students. The SG held a diversity discussion on Friday. It was an open and honest examination of the how we could better advocate for and involve all undergraduate students. It is unfortunate that The Eagle saw fit to criticize the SG for an honest discussion open to all students, but we will continue to promote diversity on campus and in the SG.
