Letter to the editor: Professors should submit textbook lists soon

As the semester is winding to a close, we just wanted to remind you of the importance of getting your textbook adoptions in to the bookstore as quickly as possible. When you get your book lists in on time, the bookstore is able to buy back books from students at higher prices, offer used copies to students at lower prices in future semesters and ensure that students have books in time for the start of classes.

Most college students are on a limited budget, and textbook costs can take up a huge portion of this. When you get textbook adoptions in on time, you are helping us save money. If the bookstore can guarantee that books will be reused the following semester, they are able to buy them back at a minimum of 50 percent of the regular price (compared to zero to 30 percent when the book has not yet been adopted). Consequently, the books that are bought back can be sold at lower, used prices for the following semester. Students are more likely to take advantage of the university bookstore when book prices are comparable to those of online shopping Web sites, such as www.amazon.com or www.half.com.

Students also benefit from having the books in the bookstore prior to their first class. When textbook adoptions are submitted late, the books may not be in the bookstore in time for the start of classes. Consequently, students are forced to start the year already behind on reading. Students may also use this situation to buy books from other sources rather than from the university bookstore.

The importance of timely textbook adoptions cannot be ignored. We thank you for your willingness to help us by getting your textbook adoptions in on time.
