More than 120 AU students joined Tuesday a national effort with thousands of others by taking part in the College Veg Pledge 2007.
Participants who took the pledge became vegetarian for the day to show their concern with the possible consequences behind the consumption of meat, according to a press release from the AU Animal Rights Effort and Students for Animal Rights. Both groups sponsored the event.
The pledge the students signed listed their reasons for not eating meat for the day. Some main reasons included students' concerns about whether consuming animals for food was cruel and the impact meat has on global warming, the environment and personal health.
One of Veg Pledge's goals was to make small steps and show there are many different options available, said Nicole Davis, president of AU's Animal Rights Effort.
"Every little decision to eat a plant-based diet instead of meat saves lives," she said.
Students from at least 34 colleges signed up to participate in the pledge as of Nov. 9.
