The United States will remove North Korea from a list of terrorism-sponsoring states and lift sanctions, a spokesman for the North Korean government said Monday, while the chief American envoy said the action remains under discussion, The Associated Press reported.
"Obviously we had a considerable discussion about these, but I need to consult within my government ... before I consult with the press about that," Christopher R. Hill, assistant secretary of state, said on Monday, according to the AP.
North Korea's claim followed the announcement Sunday by North Korean and U.S. officials that the communist nation would disclose and dismantle its nuclear programs by the end of 2007, according to The Washington Post.
The announcement came after negotiations over the weekend in Geneva, the Post reported.
Details of the agreement would be handled later this month in meetings sponsored by China and involving Russia, Japan and South Korea, Hill said Sunday according to the Post.
