Swim teams make splash to start PLs

It was a big weekend for AU swimming as both the men's and women's teams traveled to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., to compete in the Patriot League Championships, their biggest meet of the season.

On Friday, junior Meghan Thiel defended her title in the 500 free, keeping a steady pace of 29 seconds per a lap for a 4:49.52 finish that allowed her to win the event for the third straight year.

Thiel was unable to defend her 200 free title on Saturday with a time of 1:50.81, but did record a new personal best and school record.

Senior Kaitlin Moughty placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.15, resulting in a lifetime best and second-fastest time in American University history.

Junior Erin Devlin was able to score a season best in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.16. Julia Anstadt, a sophomore, placed 16th in the same race with a time of 1:08.65.

On the men's side, junior Chris Leggett went into the meet looking to make the conference final in the 50 free. However, while unable to obtain a conference title, Leggett won the consolation finals with a time of 21.04, a lifetime best and the sixth-fastest recorded time in school history.

Matt Bank, who was seeded third in the 100 fly, recorded a personal best and the seventh-fastest time in school history with his third-place time of 50.18.

Freshman Mike Toran swam a personal best time in the 400 IM with a time of 4:07.12, finishing two places ahead of junior co-captain Dan Nagelberg, who finished in 4:12.01.

Toran also swam a best in the 200 IM consolation final. His time of 1:55.52 was a personal best by over six seconds. Nagelberg swam 1:56.85 for 12th in the same race and placed a little over a second after Toran.

Both teams swam well in the relays, with the men's 200 free taking fifth with 1:24.37, and the women's 800 free capturing fourth with 7:41.01.
