The D.C. Department of Transportation will be installing additional speed bumps on residential streets near the District border, according to ABC 7 News.
The new speed bumps, which will be placed by crews at 15 locations in Wards 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8, are being installed to curb the use of residential streets as shortcuts for commuters driving out of the District, according to ABC 7. The closest speed bump location to AU will be along 46th Street N.W. between River Road and Massachusetts Avenue, according to the DCDOT Web site.
"Our goal is to protect residential streets from motorists who continue to try and use these streets as 'cut-throughs,'" said DCDOT Acting Director Emma Moneme in a press release. "Traffic calming measures such as speed humps are a great way toward improving road safety and pedestrian safety in the District."
The speed bump additions are one of several new programs being implemented by the District to improve driver safety. Additional programs include a 43-billboard road safety campaign and the hiring of Ana Towing Company to assist the Department of Public Works in towing vehicles illegally parked on major roads during rush hour periods, according to the DCDOT Web site.
