Lincoln Memorial briefly closed over suspicious liquids

Authorities determined that the "suspicious liquids" that closed the Lincoln Memorial for several hours Monday afternoon were not a threat, according to NBC4.com.

The situation began when a visitor found a threatening note next to a traveler's coffee mug near the memorial's steps. The note consisted of two questions - "Do you know what anthrax is?" and "Do you know what a bomb is?" Officials later also found a Gatorade bottle in a women's restroom at the site, according to NBC4.com.

After U.S. Park Police evacuated the memorial area, the FBI, hazardous materials units and firefighters came to the site. Officials reopened the memorial around 3 p.m. once they had decided the liquids were not a threat, according to NBC4.com.

"For the safety of all, we had the personnel and citizens removed from the area until everything was checked out, and it turned out to be negative," said Park Police Lt. Ronald Robinson.

Officials did not allow people within 50 yards of the memorial while they were investigating the liquids, according to NBC4.com.

Spring Valley bank robbed by masked man

A masked man robbed the Spring Valley Bank of America branch Saturday morning, according to The Washington Post.

The man, whose face was mostly obscured by the mask as well as a gold and black wig, reportedly walked into the bank around 10 a.m. He allegedly passed a note to a teller and fled the bank on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. Only a few employees and customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery. There were no injuries, according to The Post.

The bank, located at the corner of 49th Street and Fordham Road N.W., is in the same building as Spring Valley Patio and Ski Center.

Police said people they interviewed described the suspect as a black man in his 40s. The suspect was around 6' 2" and weighed about 250 pounds. In addition to the mask and wig, the suspect was wearing glasses and a long red coat at the time of the robbery, according to The Post.
