SG President Ashley Mushnick recently submitted a memo to Housing and Dining and Bon Appetit, detailing the problems students face when eating at the Tavern. She specifically mentioned the long wait for food during busy periods, lack of organization, unavailability of certain popular items during peak time and, occasionally, Tavern workers' impoliteness to students.
Tavern workers don't have an easy job. The way the physical space is set up, along with the system of yelling out orders from the cash register to the grill, there's chaos for everyone. They also have to serve scores of AU students every day, some of whom believe that their status as a student at AU entitles them to behave badly and mistreat service employees, including Aramark workers, as The Eagle reported recently.
Unlike most food service employees, Bon Appetit workers do not receive tips. Not only do tips give workers a financial incentive to provide friendly customer service, it's a way for patrons to show appreciation for what food service workers do. Maybe something like this would help bridge the Tavern gap.
Although any impoliteness of Tavern workers inevitably stems from the hectic work environment, it can't hurt if students are just a little nicer. After all, do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
