A new poll shows a majority of Virginians support a gay marriage ban, according to The Washington Post.
The survey, conducted by The Post, found that 53 percent of voters said they would support a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, while only 43 percent said they would oppose the law.
Northern Virginia was the only area to oppose the ban, with 55 percent of voters saying they would not support a constitutional amendment. The Post said this example shows how D.C. suburbs are falling out of line with the political leanings of the rest of the state of Virginia.
The results of the survey come as opponents of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage are trying to make Virginia the first state to oppose such legislation in an election, The Post reported. The margin of error for the polls was plus or minus 3 percent.
