ÿ In what is said to be the highest student turnout ever, more than 1,800 AU undergaduates voted in the Student Goverment elections. The candidates fought hard and the election was less hyped than some in recent history.
ÿ Ashley Mushnick was elected president with 50.4% of the vote, the first presidential candidate in at least the last three years not required to face a run-off. We endorsed Mushnick because we believed she would bring fresh ideas as an president, especially since she did not come from within the SG ranks. We hope she will govern in the open style she promised, and forcefully advocate for students, especially with the administration and the Board of Trustees as they find a new president and chart AU's future.
ÿ Outgoing Secretary Joe Vidulich waged a tough campaign, and it's always tough to lose, but we hope Viddy hangs around and offers his services. No one doubts the love and pride he feels for AU and the people here. The Undergraduate Senate could use some strong student advocates, and we hope Mr. Vidulich will consider running.
ÿ The vice president's chair is still unfilled, since Pat McGill and Katie Myers face each other in a run-off this Friday. We still encourage students to vote for Mr. McGill since he promises to bring more energetic programming, which would serve more students than are currently being reached.
ÿ Robert Donigian was elected comptroller, and though we did not endorse him, we hope he actively works to fix the ongoing problems at AUTO among other things. His opponent David Teslicko currently runs AUTO and has been trying to work out its kinks. Teslicko is a true team player, and we hope Donigian seeks his input in these matters.
Congrats to all candidates for a good race. We hope that student involvement in future elections will remain high and mudslinging is kept to a minimum.
