Georgetown slips by women's tennis

AU misses out on big doubles point as it drops close match at home

The AU woman's tennis team lost a close set of matches to its cross-town rival Georgetown Tuesday, 4-3.

Georgetown grabbed the first point of the match by winning all three doubles bouts. AU has only won the doubles point once this season

Junior Julia Colarusso won her No. 1 singles match easily, taking both sets by 6-2 scores over Georgetown's Liz Winokur. Colarusso took control of her match early and dictated the pace of the match throughout.

In the No. 2 singles match, AU sophomore Malvina DeLaCanal took her match in two sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The bottom four players did not fare as well for the Eagles.

Only No. 5 player Brandi Kligman won her match for the AU. Kligman took her match, 6-1, 6-3.

Ali Harrison fell in her No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-2.

The fourth singles match was another loss for AU as Merissa Hollinger fell in two sets, 6-3, 6-0. Allison Schmidt lost, 6-1, 6-0 in the number six singles match.

The last year for the woman's tennis team has been an uneven one. The Eagles have yet to show a consistent pattern of winning on the season. The team is only 2-4 on the season and is 0-2 in the Patriot League.

One of the few bright spots has been Colarusso.

She finshed March with a 6-1 singles record and was named PL Player of the Month. Colarusso, who was all-PL selection last year, has been the most consistent winner for the Eagles.

Despite frequently losing and knowing this will be the last year of the tennis program Colarusso says it doesn't bother her or her teammates all that much.

"Most of the team is pretty pleased with itself, despite the fact we haven't won too many matches," she said. "The team doesn't really focus on the program ending."

The team has less than a month left in the season. Up next for the team is back-to-back conference matches against Lehigh and Lafayette.
