A Maryland judge ruled yesterday that sniper John Allen Muhammad is competent to stand trial and allowed him to fire his lawyers and represent himself during his first-degree murder trial, said The Washington Post.
Montgomery County Circuit Judge James L. Ryan discouraged the defendant from dismissing his attorneys but allowed him to do so after Muhammad insisted that he doesn't trust the two public defenders assigned to the case, The Washington Post said.
Muhammad is scheduled to go on trial for six homicides committed in Montgomery during the October 2002 shooting spree.
