Tropical Storm Alpha formed Saturday in the Caribbean, which sets a record for the most named storms in an Atlantic hurricane season, The Washington Post reported.
The storm marks the first time that meteorologists have had to turn to the Greek alphabet for storm names. The previous record, dating back to 1933, stood at 21 named storms in a single hurricane season. Hurricane season traditionally runs from June 1 through November 30. Alpha marks the 22nd system to reach tropical storm status, packing winds of 40 mph.
Alpha was centered about 70 miles south of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, and moving northwest at about 15 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
As of August 2, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expected an additional 11 to 14 to-be-named storms from August through November.
