National brief: Officer shot at Citrus Bowl

A University of Central Florida police officer was shot to death Saturday afternoon by an Orlando police officer as fans were arriving to watch the Citrus Bowl.

The officer was working with the state of Florida to help curb underage drinking, according to the Washington Post.

Witnesses told the Orlando Sentinel that the incident started when Officer Mario Jenkins tried to break up a tailgate party. When he encountered resistance, they said he fired three shots into the air. An Orlando police officer saw Jenkins, who was wearing street clothes, and shot him several times.

Authorities believe a third person was involved, said Barbara Jones, spokeswoman for the Orlando Police Department.

The shooting happened before a game between the University of Central Florida and Marshall University.

"It's pretty freaky. You don't think you would see this at a UCF game," said University of Central Florida junior Nicole Jorgensen.
