KPU receives funds for high profile speaker

The Kennedy Political Union and the Student Union Board received funds totaling $74,000 for campus activities this spring from the General Assembly, the legislative branch of the Student Confederation on Tuesday.

KPU will receive the bulk of those funds, with $60,000 for a guest speaker. The name of the speaker has not been released but KPU Director Emily Fuller hinted at the speaker's identity.

"It's not anything that we'd get in trouble for telling people...but I think it's best we keep it under wraps in case for some reason the speaker does not come," Fuller said. "But he is a very big, well-known, prominent political and military leader who was in the Bush Cabinet."

SUB will receive $14,000 for an April 20 concert in Bender Arena featuring various artists, and also to cover performances by Andrew W.K. and Gavin DeGraw earlier in the year.

Several GA members, including J.D. Teitelman and Joseph Vidulich, spoke out against the bill because SUB failed to receive GA approval prior to booking the entertainment.

"We are being fiscally irresponsible," Teitelman told the Assembly.
