Jack Samson, 18, threw his General Education Western Philosophy class into a frenzy Tuesday morning when he quoted Plato's "Republic" in response to the professor asking if anyone knew how to work the projector.
"I usually don't like to mention that I've read 'The Republic.' I mean, people are usually impressed enough when I inform them that I started at AU with enough AP credits to be considered a sophomore," Samson said.
Although 'The Republic' had absolutely nothing to do with what was actually going on in the class, Samson's fellow students seemed appreciative.
"He's just such a smart guy. I mean, what first year college student has read "The Republic?" Not me and every other person sitting in that class, that's for sure. Heck, I hadn't even heard of it until Jack brought it up," confessed classmate Anna Erikson, 18.
Another reason Samson's classmates were so happy to hear his thoughts on "The Republic" was because it was simply a prudent use of class time. Another classmate, Ted Jameson explained, "It's just so frustrating when my professor, who gets paid to teach me, just goes on and on. ... Do they think I'm spending $35,000 a year to hear what she has to say? I want to know what Jack thinks"
