The engine company that responds to fires at AU moved from its temporary location on Nebraska Avenue to Connecticut Avenue.
Engine Company 20 is now at 4930 Connecticut Ave. NW, sharing space with Engine Company 31.
The location on Nebraska, which it previously shared with the Department of Homeland Security was "never intended to be permanent quarters," said Kathryn Friedman, D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesperson.
The building was "not appropriate for winter use," Friedman said.
Response time to AU calls is not expected to change significantly with the change in location.
"It should have very little effect," said Friedman.
The renovation could be finished as early as spring of next year.
Built in 1901 to house Chemical Company 3, the firehouse has been the home of Engine Company 20 since 1907.
The department is trying to keep the historic characteristics of the building in the renovation.
It is part of a D.C. Fire Department plan to improve and upgrade three stations every year.
