The Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity has established an associate chapter at AU and is recruiting students to become Founding Fathers of the chapter.
"Because of the success of our expansion at George Washington University, we decided to start a branch here at AU," Expansion Team Leader David Corey said. "AU is one of the top-notch universities of the area, and there are a number of men here who are not Greek but would like to join a fraternity."
Representatives from the fraternity have been on campus for the past three and a half weeks, and will table in Mary Graydon Center throughout the rest of the month.
"I am a charter member of Pi Kappa Phi ... hats off to the brothers who chose to start something brand-new here at American," said University Chaplain Joe Eldridge. Eldridge joined the fraternity in 1964 when he was an undergraduate at Tennessee Wesleyan College. He describes his time as a brother as "splendid."
"Our fraternity is based on C.L.A.S.S., or what we like to call character, leadership, academics, sportsmanship and service," Corey said. "We have recruited 25 men to join our organization so far."
Pi Kappa Phi recently appointed its executive council, which includes Paul Perry, James Pollock, Scott Kalman, Brian Reilly and Scott Kutler.
"We just got started and we are excited to participate in lots of events on campus, such as mixers with sororities and a football tournament with other frats," said Pi Kappa Phi brother Carlos Ramirez.
Pi Kappa Phi was founded in 1904 at the College of Charleston. There are currently 120 active chapters in the United States. To learn more about Pi Kappa Phi, visit its Web site at www.pikapp.org.
