The assembled buildings around the main Quad are standing out more with the construction of new signs for each academic building. The bases of the signs have been completed since mid-September, and the rest will be completed soon, according to Jerry Gager, director of the Office of Facilities Planning and Development.
Each sign is based on the walls constructed at the Sept. 11 Memorial plaza and the back entrance of the Battelle-Tompkins Building, Gager said. Pre-cast concrete pieces are expected to arrive within the next few weeks.
The signs are the result of years of planning, according to Gager.
"Those building signs, we've been talking about for years," Gager said. "There were temporary signs put up at Kogod and Ward awaiting design to work to tie together the Quad."
Gager noted that planning started a year ago with cardboard mock-ups created in the spring.
"The memorial plaza solidified the way these signs should be," Gager said. "It is all incremental with creating a vocabulary, so it's part of the overall scheme."
"The new benches, the signs, the lights, they're all coming together," Gager added.
Jorge Abud, assistant vice president for Facilities Administrative Service, said the signs cost $13,000 each. The Facilities Improvement Budget covers the cost of the signs.
The completed signs should not require additional lighting, Gager said.
"They will be fairly near [the] light fixtures that we are putting in," Gager said. "We may want to light some signs but we may not need to."
Physical Plant Operations recently completed new lights outside the Kogod School of Business, Ward Circle Building, Hurst Hall, School of International Service Building and the Kay Spiritual Life Center.
