Local school picked by NASA

A local Maryland middle school was one of only 50 schools around the nation selected for the NASA Explorer Schools program, administrators said. Eastern Middle School, in nearby Montgomery County, Md., was the first Maryland school selected for a program that intensely trains teachers and administrators in math, astronomy and other sciences.

Mass transit systems increasing security

Mass transit systems along the East Coast are increasing security measures in the wake of the bombing of a train station in Madrid, Spain, last month and the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. "We've implemented security changes, and we're constantly reviewing them on a daily basis," said John McCarthy, spokesman for New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

GU deals with drunks differently

Georgetown University students do not face disciplinary action if an ambulance is called for alcohol poisoning, according to Kristin Midon, president of the Georgetown Emergency Response Medical Service. AU students, in contrast, receive a call home on the first substance-related incident, and can also receive punishments such as writing papers or going to Judicial and Mediation Services (JAMS), as The Eagle has previously reported.

D.C. looks to make bars smoke-free

The D.C. government is considering a bill that would make it illegal to smoke in any bar, nightclub or restaurant in D.C. Advocates of smoke-free workplaces have also requested an initiative that will appear on ballots in November if the referendum is approved in a hearing Wednesday.
