Eagles sweep weekend on a PL run

·

The Eagles cruelly smashed any grand schemes Bucknell or Colgate had of ending the AU Volleyball team's perfect run toward its fourth straight Patriot League title after another AU-dominant weekend in Bender Arena. On Friday night, the Eagles put forth a balanced attack, led by senior setter Courtney Mulford, and swept Bucknell in a little over an hour's time. Eighteen hours later, a similar scene was played out as the Eagles swept an undersized Colgate squad.

Sideline Scholars: Curse ends, but Boston turned on end

·

Be careful what you wish for. Bostonians spent almost nine decades longing to "Reverse the Curse." Now, as the Fenway faithful get over their World Series hangovers, they may have awoken a sleeping giant. Looking back on the 20th century and, more importantly, recent history, few regions have had better luck than the greater Massachusetts area.

Men's soccer scores first-ever Patriot League season title

While AU Men's Soccer teams from past years have accomplished such feats as qualifying for the NCAA tournament and even advancing to the round of 16 in 2002, this year's team did something Saturday night that none of those teams had: win a regular-season Patriot League title. The Eagles did so by wining, 3-2, at Lafayette in overtime, twice recovering from one-goal deficits before senior forward Sean Albright rocketed home the winner in the 100th minute - the final minute of the first of two possible overtime periods.

Sideline Scholars: Rookie QB impresses armchair quarterbacks

Ben Roethlisberger won his fifth consecutive start for the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday over a team that had been previously undefeated. Now, I'm not going to toot Ben's horn just because he plays for my hometown team, but I think it's a good idea to put the win in perspective and give him the credit he deserves.

AU seeks to control PL and march to NCAAs

After a regular season that saw it perfect in Patriot League play and ranked No. 7 in the country, the AU Women's Field Hockey team now turns its attention to the Patriot League tournament. The team enters this weekend's tournament with an overall record of 16-2-0 and a 5-0-0 record in PL play. It enters as the No. 1 seed and will play Lehigh in the opening game on Saturday. A win would guarantee the Eagles a spot in the championship game against the winner of Saturday's Holy Cross vs. Colgate match.
