Women's soccer digs own grave vs. Mason, Tech

·

Unlike last year's near-perfect start, the AU women's soccer team has begun this season stumbling over its own feet, and worse, sending the ball into its own goal. They did the latter twice at Tuesday's home contest against George Mason - once off the head of freshman defender Jess Cole in the 44th minute, and once off the hip of sophomore back Annette Scott in the 71st.

Their best player is an over-the-hill third baseman who runs slower than molasses in winter. Their best hitter is a problem child who was left off the postseason roster last year because he was such trouble. Their best pitcher is a Cuban defector who won a World Series MVP almost a decade ago.

Sacrifice for the love of the game

In Washington, double-speak and controlling the message is the name of the game. It's true when it comes to politics, but do college athletes do the same thing? Apparently they do. I was in the crowd of reporters at the Charlotte Bobcats training who were grilling Duke basketball player Shavlik Randolph about why the underperforming, often-injured "big white stiff" was considering the NBA draft.

AU Lax beats Bucknell, 14-8, ends 3-game slide

At the start of the second half of Saturday's match against Bucknell at Reeves Field, the AU Women's Lacrosse team seemed dangerously close to repeating the same mistakes that had mired it in a three-game slide. The Bison, who trailed by four at the break, scored three goals in the first five minutes.
