From Dresden, with love

In the past three months, the Dresden Dolls have gone from a do-it-yourself Boston band to one of the most desired duos you have yet to hear. Sounds impossible, but in this musical environment in which (1) MTV and radio have both sold their souls to Satan and (2) Mainstream artists do not actually exist, such deviations from the norm are frustratingly rare.

'Punisher,' 'Kill Bill: Vol. 2' vie for top spot

·

"Kill Bill: Vol. 2" will not be the only film opening tomorrow centering around a roaring rampage of revenge. "The Punisher," the next big-screen adaptation of a Marvel comic, opens tomorrow as well. Both plots contain individuals seeking vengeance after an act of mass violence committed against those closest to them.

About to embark on an expansive national tour, his first headlining solo, indie rocker Vanderslice took a moment to reveal what makes him tick.

Sex & Sensibility: Job hunting in real world

Writing a r?sum? is consuming enough. I have been trying to figure out ways to document my positive professional attributes onto one sheet of paper, while making sure to emphasize the "authentic" things about me. My entire adolescence flashes back from my first job at the restaurant to the work I've done at professional firms.

Whitehead stirs Blues Alley crowd with set

GEORGETOWN - The scene at Blues Alley on Monday had the dreary romanticism of any 1940s private eye flick. Clammy weather, which had soaked the incoming patrons, made the warmth of the low-lit jazz supper club all the more inviting. As the lights dimmed to a shadowy whisper, guitarist Rick Whitehead ascended to the bandstand unaccompanied by his bandmates.

New-wave band frontman gives Head

It's important to understand the environment of your rock show, because it can be a wicked beast, and if you let it gain control of you, it could mean your life. You can have the party, an accepting upheaval of alcohol-fueled positive energy that's bought and sold at your local liquor stores like religion at church, or you can have the pit, a mob of teenage hooligans sweating with drug free intensity. While Daryl Palumbo's full-time band Glassjaw brings the pit, his new side project, Head Automatica, brings the party.

Coheed and Cambria: Boys just want to have fun

Coheed and Cambria have been pigeonholed in many ways. Critics have labeled them the "emo Rush," and fans and critics alike have targeted them solely as a concept band. While drummer Josh Eppard is flattered that his band is so often compared to Canadian prog-rock legends Rush, he feels it is important to realize that Coheed is its own band.

When in Rome: Encountering the backpacker mentality

But all of these transportation inconveniences were worth it. To remind those who may have forgotten, my friend Rachel and I decided to spend our spring break on the Greek island of Corfu. Neither of us had heard anything about the island before deciding to travel there. In fact, we had only read about it in a guidebook two days before we left. We left Rome for spring break a little anxious about what to expect.

Autopilot Off debuts LP

Monroe, N.Y.'s Autopilot Off has been touring with only a short five-song EP under their belt. That will change tomorrow when the band's full-length major label debut, "Make a Sound," is released. It is no mistake that this is a great album all the way through and a rather thought-out move by the band.

Film: 'The Girl Next Door'

It is difficult to decide what exactly to take from "The Girl Next Door." The basic premise is simple enough: a responsible high school senior named Matthew (Emile Hirsch), who is also the class president, finds his last year before he goes off to college to be less than he imagined it to be. That is, until the girl next door walks into his life.

Film: 'The Alamo'

"The Alamo" tells the story of the 13-day siege of the former mission in San Antonio in 1836, right in the midst of the Texas Revolution. The film has excellent performances by Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton and Jason Patric as well as newcomer Patrick Wilson, but lacks the accuracy necessary for a historical film.

Kidman bares teeth in 'Dogville'

The first adjective that could begin to describe Lars von Trier's new film "Dogville" is "striking." The instance is the opening scene, which is a downward shot on a soundstage with chalked outlines of houses with labels and minimal props, perhaps a desk or a wall.

Shapiro looks ahead after sniper case

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Jonathan Shapiro sits in his sunny Old Town office, the picture of contentment. Wearing a comfy sweater, jeans and socks, Shapiro - a 1974 graduate of AU's Washington College of Law - is a friendly, laid-back kind of guy who enjoys sculpting and photography in his spare time. That is, when he's not busy defending alleged murderers.

Interview with actor Hugh Dancy

Tall, handsome and gracious, Hugh Dancy seems perfectly suited to play a Prince Charming character. Seated before a luxurious fireplace in the D.C. Ritz-Carlton, the affable 29-year-old British actor nevertheless seems genuine and down-to-earth talking about his role in "Ella Enchanted," a film adaptation of the young-adult novel by Gail Carson Levine, which opens Friday.
