My '08 primary primer

·

With the "surge" in Iraq a failure and incompetence still the governing philosophy of the White House, the presidential primary campaign is a gracious reminder that this national nightmare is in its last throes. The bar has been set low for the 44th president, but the stakes tower.

Letters to the editor

SG letter to AU community As most of you may already know, last Wednesday evening Alex Manzanares submitted his resignation as secretary of the Student Government to President Joe Vidulich and Speaker Caitlin Hodgkins. The Student Government regrets this situation.

Housing Web site has its issues

Amid the rising number of triples in the dorms and increased freshman enrollment, it seems safe to conclude that AU's new off-campus housing Web site is a much-welcomed amenity. Launched in June 2007, the new service is the brainchild of former Student Government President Ashley Mushnick.

Letters to the Editor

Support for New Sex Columnist Women's Initiative would like to extend our sincere gratitude to The Eagle for making this year's sex column more educational and less about the author's personal sex life. Practical sex education that promotes openness and information over taboos and fiction has been one of WI's goals since its founding.

Corrections for Aug. 30, 2007

In "AU Senior Named Student Trustee-elect," Mark Huey was misidentified as secretary to the board of trustees. He is actually assistant secretary to the board. Mary Kennard is the board's secretary. The following are corrections to photo credits: "Students may face arrest over protest," page 1, Alberto Halpern "Freshmen start D.

The value of science literacy

Humans are selfish as to their place in the universe, but it may not be their fault. The life cycle of a star similar to our sun is over 10 billion years, while the time it takes a single neuron, a type of cell in the brain that sends electrical signals, to fire is far less than a second.

Some birth control forms cause concern

Students heading to the Health Center for contraceptives this year should be sure to consult their doctors before filling prescriptions, even if the scripts are provided by Health Center employees. Many recent studies highlight the side effects of birth control, which, like all medication, vary depending on the brand.

Vacancy challenges SG unity

At the height of his campaign for Student Government secretary, Alex Manzanares was the candidate to beat. The only student to submit a platform to The Eagle, Manzanares promised to facilitate communication between the SG and the student body, to compile data about SG projects and to ensure more transparency in SG functions.

Letter from the editor

Dear readers, As the 2007-2008 editor in chief, I'm committed to making The Eagle a high-quality, accurate news source that the university community can trust. My staff and I have always worked hard to provide you with accurate and current news, and this year we have an even stronger commitment to that.

Recycling on campus I am writing this piece in response to an article last year about the ongoing effort in making the AU community greener with the addition of bio-diesel and electric vehicles and other environmentally-friendly procedures. Though I applaud those efforts, I was wondering why such emphasis has been placed on the most advanced of technologies when the simplest of methods has been almost completely ignored - recycling.

Warrants need some clarification

Almost four months after AU students stormed the Ward building to protest a speech delivered by ex-White House aide Karl Rove, The Eagle has learned that the university recently notified six of the protesters that they may be served warrants for their arrest.

Drinking policy misses its mark

Starting this Friday, American University students cited for underage drinking off-campus can be punished through AU's judicial system, according to Associate Dean of Students, Sara Waldron. While such action has always been permissible under Section III of the Student Conduct Code, it has not been enforced until now.

Embracing a 'radical' tendency within

I used to call myself a Republican. It was a short phase, lasting from September 2001 until early 2007. Back in the 2000 presidential vote I wanted Al Gore to win because I was 11 years old and he looked smarter in the Saturday Night Live debates. But when he lost, I didn't mind.

Expect a little, gain a lot in 2008

While I do not buy the extraordinary emphasis political pundits place on the expectations game, it is an integral part of campaign politics. A candidate's ability to meet, exceed or fall short of his or her expectations will certainly play a big role in 2008, and as it stands now, only two candidates are in prime position to exceed their expectations: Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton.

Our Very Own Factory of Privilege

What sets AU apart from other top liberal arts universities around the country? I'm not talking about our academic programs, our professors, our extracurricular offerings or even our status as a national arboretum. As important as those traits may be, the meat and potatoes of one's experience here rests on the composition of the student body.

Views on Virginia Tech I take great issue with Alexandra LeBraun's letter to the editor regarding the Virginia Tech shooting and the "Progressive Paulitics" column. It is rather sad and indeed disturbing that she misses the point so blatantly - that there is always something that we can do.

Liberalism and War

Earlier this year, my parents packed their bags for Iraq while my older brother chastised them for ignoring God's message of peace. My younger brother quickly followed. They have been there for months. My parents send e-mails about falling asleep to the sound of mortars exploding in Baghdad.

Case for Competitive Bipartisanship

In America, I am proud to call myself a Democrat and look forward to another Democratic triumph in 2008. Those who know me, however, are surprised by my apparent affinity toward the Republican Party. I have regularly attended College Republicans meetings, been to numerous conservative conferences and often called myself a "Fox News Liberal.
