Staff Editorial: Saving Sudan

Thursday's forum on the Sudan conflict, hosted by the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program and the Kennedy Political Union, was an incredibly insightful glimpse into one of Africa's most devastating crises. Although a last-minute no-show left the panel without a representative from the Sudanese government, the forum's talking points were still incredibly relevant.

Capitol blues: Media killed '08 primary giddiness

Every few weeks, I am given the opportunity to say pretty much anything I want, and for my efforts, I am awarded the benefit of your attention. There are few rules: As long as the article is a certain length, in proper English and sufficiently left-leaning, my thoughts on the American political landscape get a readership, and I get a byline.

Op-Ed: Beware of law school rankings

Last week, U.S. News and World Report published its annual law school rankings. After the AU Washington College of Law slipped from 43rd to 47th place last year, I was convinced we'd slide again - this time into the deep dark pit informally known as tier two (schools ranked 50 through 100).

Common sense: Follow the facts, or please don't vote

Nothing cheapens a democracy or ruins it faster than a bunch of ill-informed, politically lazy voters clogging the polls. Here is my philosophy: If you can't name at least one of your senators, don't vote. If you can't name your congressman or even the party they are affiliated with, don't vote.

Correction for March 27, 2008

In the photo accompanying "Motor burnout brings out DCFD," the cut line indicated that the fire was a false alarm. In fact, the alarm was real; there was smoke in the building. However, there was no fire.

Correction for March 20, 2008

In The Eagle's March 20 issue, the Police Blotter reported that an unknown individual stole a flat-screen television from its wall stand in front of the Career Center. In fact, the television was stolen from the wall stand in front of the Campus Store.

Progressive point: Repairing the house Reagan once built

The Democratic Party is often painted as an amalgamation of discrete factions and diverse interests, a "big tent" holding together a circus of minorities, laborers, civil libertarians and foreign policy doves, among many others. The heterogeneity of its composition, goes the caricature, has produced a party unwieldy and unsustainable.

Staff Editorial: Another pointless poll

No matter how the pundits spin it, the recent Rock the Vote poll that depicts Americans between the ages of 18 and 30 as more concerned about the economy than the Iraq war is both unsurprising and insignificant. Although we'd be remiss to admit that the economy is in serious trouble, the poll's results are largely contaminated by its timing.

Letter to the Editor

What a great year for AU Athletics and the AU community as a whole. Last week, over 100 students crammed themselves into two buses to make the 13-hour trek to Birmingham, Ala. When we reached our destination, we were rewarded with a view of history in the making.

What a travesty: Time to rethink District gun laws

This month, the Supreme Court will hear arguments about the constitutionality of D.C.'s ban on handgun ownership. Until now, cases regarding a local government's ability to restrict gun ownership have only been heard in lower courts. The constitutional issues involved are worthy of much discussion, but I prefer to focus on the real-world effects of this ban on the District residents.

Staff Editorial: Five years later

On the heels of yet another protest, the Iraq war's potential as a financial, political and emotional quagmire seems to have come into full fruition. In the five years since the U.S. military stormed into Baghdad under the misguided and disturbing notion of a "shock and awe" campaign, the United States has spent nearly $3 trillion on the war, according to Harvard professor Linda J.

Life in the district: Healthy food too scarce on campus

This is an ugly month for college students. Late March marks roughly six months since we've seen a full sunny week. It's been roughly half a year since we haven't had to intern all day, go to class all night and then write papers to the pale flicker of late-night infomercials.

Staff Editorial: Next stop: Alabama

The only disappointing part of the Eagles' 52-46 win over Colgate was that most of us were home for spring break when it happened. Men's basketball has injected this campus with a much-needed dose of excitement; one we can only hope persists long after this year's NCAA tournament ends.

Staff Editorial: Preparing for the future

We have mixed emotions regarding the university's creation of a new strategic plan. The proposal - which is currently more a bunch of ideas than a written, specific policy - is likely to become the long awaited replacement to former President Ben Ladner's November 2001 15 Point Plan.

Corrections for March 3, 2008

In the "Bustin' Rhymes" feature pictures, King Poetic was identified as Dan Franklin. His name is actually Drew Franklin. Also contrary to the cutline, DJ Phanatic spun for all of the musicians. In "Bill proposes tax forms should substitute for portions of FAFSA," Frankie Solomon was misidentified as male.

I am deeply saddened by your endorsement of Mr. Andrew Woods. While I respect Mr. Woods, I believe your staff has made the wrong decision. This obviously will not be the first time The Eagle has taken the wrong side in SG elections. After all, three of your endorsements last year (for VP, secretary and comptroller) did not carry out the entirety of their terms.

In my humble opinion: A tiered approach to rising tuition

What do you get for your tuition? For most students, the reward comes in one of three ways. You take a class. You can go into a classroom, learn from an expert in the field, sit in a Torquemada-inspired chair, work on a graffiti-covered desk, bathe in the glow of an overhead projector and use a great library.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

This is a response to Rachel Karp's Feb. 25 letter. First off, Ms. Karp, I am very sorry about James' situation. No doubt he is still, and will probably remain for years, in considerable pain and some disability, even though his medical bills were covered.
