Czechs speak the same, smell a little different

In the smoky recesses of Akropolis, a dingy bar and concert venue in one of Prague's blue-collar suburbs, Czech band Zoe-Deer was testing the sound system. They greeted the crowd in Czech and thanked the crowd for being there in Czech. "Diky moc," the lead singer said, "Thank you much," and then launched into the opening number.

Storm hits AU, Quad mud pit costs thousands

AU enacted its emergency action plan to maintain vital operations over the weekend as Hurricane Isabel caused campus-wide power outages Thursday night, according to Julie Weber, executive director of Housing and Dining Programs, students destroyed sections of the Quad.

Factory displays diverse media, artists

The U.S. Navy constructed a factory on the banks of the Potomac in 1918. More than 10,000 torpedoes, a world war, two renovations and 160 artists later, the Torpedo Factory Art Center draws more than 800,000 visitors each year. The 83 open studios of sculptors, painters, photographers, jewelers and other artists infuse life and color into the gray cement gut of the World War II naval torpedo station.
