My parents never traveled much with me when I was younger. That's fine. I probably would have been really embarrassed anyway, given their proclivity for singing in public and asking me if I've pooped lately. It's nice to be surrounded by your peers while abroad, what with common interests like staying up past 10 p.m. and all that. At least that's what I thought, until my recent trip to Amsterdam, where I was confronted by the irritating subculture of young, "backpacking" Americans.

Up until last week, I had never missed a plane, train or automobile in my 20-plus years. It's not that I operate on a schedule of rigid timeliness and punctuality. Anyone who has agreed to meet me at TDR knows this. It's more about sheer luck.

One of the most hilarious scenes in Andrew Douglas' remake of 1979's "The Amityville Horror" is when the priest who took it upon himself to bless the haunted house of Amityville is accosted by flies and gets the hell out of there.

A strong network of family members is a crucial element for indie-rock band the Fiery Furnaces. Not only is their driving force the dynamic, song-writing duo of Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger, but their upcoming double-album features a little bit of their grandmother's vocal talent as well.

"Mr. Holland's Opus" this is not. Yet there is something incredible about having a professor or teacher who is musically inclined. They manage to become human while still maintaining that air of inspiration. It seems like a rare treat to discover something personal about a professor, such as finding out he or she is an accomplished musician, or shares a common obsession with an obscure group or that he or she spends any given weekend shredding in some garage band.

The horror genre seems to have strayed from the psychological, cerebral type of fear and given in to the more easily attained sensory experience of just shocking the audience with disturbing imagery. In the case of "The Ring 2," what was once a rather innovative plotline has caved to the whims of a director and cast bent toward insubstantial scares.

When I was in high school, watching MTV Spring Break, I always thought I would be the girl to win the wet t-shirt contest. But being a senior in college on my last spring break in the Bahamas, I felt for the innocent girls lashing off their bikini tops for MTV's retired "Real World" cast and an audience of Mr. Drunk and Mr. Mullet.
