Only eight baseball teams are going to the playoffs, and 24 are not. By simple math, the chances are better that your team is missing rather than making the playoffs. With all the ink sure to be devoted to the World Series contenders in the coming month, I think now is a good time to reflect on what can be learned from the also-rans and almosts of the 2004 baseball season.

As the home of the federal government, D.C. is the political hub of America. It comes as no surprise, then, that many students who come to AU are politically active. You certainly don't need to be politically active to have an enriching experience at AU, but if you do take an interest in politics, this is a great place to spend four years.

The American Red Cross is developing several strategies to use water vehicles to transport emergency supplies in the event of a terrorist attack or other emergency that closes off roads or bridges. One plan calls for having a military-style landing crafts on call to move, while another proposes putting 10 permanently based landing crafts in important areas.

The sports calendar works in funny ways. College footballs bowl season gives way to the NFL playoffs, which in turn give way to the basketball conference tournaments and the Big Dance. For these brief weeks after the NCAA tournament concludes and before the NBA and NHL playoffs kick into high gear, we're entertained not by the successes of the best teams, but by the hopes and dreams of the worst. Baseball season has begun.

AU Men's Tennis split a pair of matches this weekend, defeating Bucknell, 5-2, on Saturday before losing at Colgate, 4-3, on Sunday. The weekend brings the Eagles' Patriot League record to 3-1.
