Imagine yourself joining a Greek organization. Imagine finding your brothers, your sisters or your closest of friends. Here, you’ve found the type of connection you grew up aching for when you went off to college. For at least one of the 18 students expelled last April, this is exactly what they loved about Epsilon Iota.

First and foremost, The Eagle would like to reaffirm its commitments to students, faculty and staff of color and of marginalized communities represented here at American University. We support, love and wish to uplift those who are the targets of the Confederate flags found hanging at American University, a racist and anti-semitic incident.

The Eagle recently learned the results of a 2015 study of American University graduate students. That study indicates an undeniable disparity between how undergraduate and graduate students interact with sexual assault support resources at AU.

Since 2001, Epsilon Iota, a former chapter of Alpha Tau Omega, has existed at American University as something of a wicked folk tale, hidden behind a dark, unsettling shroud. Yet, the dangers of this “underground fraternity” are very, very real.

On May 1, the campus awoke and a new American University Student Government president, Taylor Dumpson, began her first day in office. The same day, the campus community confronted a direct threat against the black women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, a historically African-American sorority. As a member of that sorority, Dumpson potently replied, “We must use this time to reflect on what we value as a community: that bigotry, hate and racism cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Every year, AU takes on another class of intelligent, capable students who seek to make their new home in our safe campus community. Eagle Summit orientation sessions and prospective student tours heavily push the idea of AU’s neighborhood being a safe-haven bubble from the general D.C. metropolitan population. Since mid-January, the AU neighborhood has seen a rise in crime with nine robberies in the areas near campus, six of which were armed. AU’s police department sent timely alerts to the campus body for four of these crimes, which occurred on Jan. 16 and the night of Feb. 24.

The Eagle is happy to welcome AU’s new president Sylvia Mathews Burwell to our campus community. As well as being AU’s first female president, Burwell holds credentials from Harvard University, Oxford University and has esteemed experience in both the public and private sector, including most recently serving as the Secretary of Health and Human Services under the Obama Administration. This vast amount of experience is representative of the high quality candidates that AU selected to lead the university in its transition of focus towards being a more researched based institution.

The past few weeks have been filled with turbulence, transition and uncertainty. Nonetheless, the main theme has been “experience,” particularly that of D.C. students and the experience of participating in the massive Women’s March on Washington and the inauguration of Donald Trump.

AU’s policy on student free speech has come under a harsh spotlight in the last several weeks, as students have vigorously protested in the wake of the election. Of all these protests, the one that has received by far the most attention is the flag burning on Nov. 9.
