American University women’s soccer (0-4) fell to Loyola (3-1) in a 1-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon from Reeves Field. Though AU hasn’t been able to find its way into the win column or score a goal this season, the team has shown week-to-week improvement in its passing completion, strength in the backline and movement as a unit on both sides of the ball.

You might have been disappointed in 2021 if you were a fan of the American University men’s basketball team. The Eagles went 4-6, played six fewer regular-season games than initially scheduled and were bounced out of the Patriot League Tournament in the quarterfinal round.

Now that AU Swim & Dive is back in action, there are plenty of new faces walking the deck of Frailey Pool. After AU added its largest recruiting class in recent memory, the class of 2024 is helping flip the script for the men’s and women’s programs as they look to rebuild and add depth as strong competitors in the Patriot League.

Men’s basketball senior guard Jamir Harris announced Tuesday via Twitter that he would be transferring to Seton Hall. As a graduate transfer, Harris is eligible to play immediately next season and will have two years left of eligibility to play for the Big East school.

After being held scoreless in the first 88 minutes of the match, American University men’s soccer (2-1) came back to defeat the Loyola Greyhounds (0-1) 2-1 in overtime Saturday. The Greyhounds dominated the Eagles until the final 15 minutes of the match, keeping AU from controlling the ball until late in the game.

American University women’s soccer (0-2) took to Reeves Field to host Army West Point (3-0) in its home-opener on Saturday afternoon. Though the sun was bright and the team was pumped to play on its own field for the first time in 514 days, the Eagles didn't capitalize on the home-field advantage in this 5-0 loss. Army came into the year ranked second in the Patriot League preseason poll and has yet to allow a goal this season.

Despite the heart they showed, American University wrestlers Tim Fitzpatrick (174 pounds) and Gage Curry (125 pounds) both had first-round exits at the 2021 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships. The odds were stacked against Fitzpatrick and Curry, who were seeded 28th and 27th, respectively. Fitzpatrick lost to 5th-seeded Michigan wrestler Logan Massa while Curry lost to 6th-seeded Jakob Camacho of NC State.

After over a year without playing any games, the American University field hockey team won their season opener against Bucknell in a 4-0 shutout. Most of the lineup consisted of returning players — goalie Bryn Underwood was the only freshman starter. Since most of the rotation had already played together, the team had incredible chemistry, and the freshmen quickly found a rhythm in their first-ever Patriot League game.

The Eagles (1-1) fell to the Bucknell Bison (1-1) 2-1 in an intense match Saturday that saw no break in the action. Scoring only once in the contest, the Eagles fell victim to fouls, set pieces and shot-after-shot from Bucknell.

The American University women’s basketball team (7-4) fell to Boston University (12-2) in the Patriot League Semifinals 72-51, ending the Eagles wild year in the same building where they fell last season. Though the Eagles had hoped to reverse last year’s 46-44 loss in the quarterfinals, they were unable to punch their ticket to the Patriot League Championship game.

After 491 days without American University women’s soccer, a new era for the program has arrived. In the first game under head coach Marsha Harper and of the 2021 season, the Eagles fell short in a 1-0 loss to Lehigh University Saturday evening.

The Eagles (1-0) soundly defeated the reigning Patriot League champion Mountain Hawks (0-1) 2-0 in their first game in over a year, scoring in both halves of the contest while their defense held off a flurry of Lehigh shots.
