Over the past two days, students had the opportunity to vote not just for their Student Government representation, but for a student activity fee increase. This would be the first increase in nearly five years. As reported by The Eagle, the proposed fee increase will be from $88.50 per semester to an even $100 per semester.

On Monday, Oct. 8, I went to see a show presented by a group called Viva Kultura which had been touring in Europe and presented one of their first shows in Washington D.C. in the Kay Spiritual Life Center. The dance show was brought here by AU Vegetarians and Bhakti Yoga Club. The theme was Hinduism and Indian culture.

University President Sylvia Burwell recently distributed the university administration’s six-month update to the Plan for Inclusive Excellence, AU’s diversity and inclusion strategy. What is noticeably absent from the update and the plan in general is information that would contextualize the campus climate that made the Inclusive Excellence plan necessary.

I came to American University because it houses the most politically active students in the nation, but it was not until the Kavanaugh hearings that this title upgraded from a mere rumor, spread by campus-tour guides and proud convocation speeches, to a personal reality felt in my first-year orbit.

By the time I graduate American University, my accrued debt could potentially buy me a small house. My dad explained this to me in regards to the loan I borrowed from the bank and how it would affect me financially in the long term. He referred to the debt as my mortgage before my actual mortgage.

Idealizing “cooperation” in today's polarized political system ignores the enormous contemporary social issues that divide political parties through personal beliefs rather than fiscal differences. Being “bipartisan” in America today means choosing to compromise with people who believe the following: transgender Americans don’t have the right to their own gender identity, women shouldn't have the power to make decisions about their own bodies and citizens should not exercise their right to protest police violence against Black Americans.

This semester brought institutional changes to the University’s meal plan program. Specifically, independent food vendors on campus, such as Megabytes and the Mudbox cafe among others, no longer accept Dining Dollars and can only accept EagleBucks.

In 1968, similar to today, the United States was a divided country going through turbulent, political times. Naturally, these sentiments extended to the American University community, where anti-Vietnam War protests and civil rights sit-ins rightfully occurred on a regular basis.
