Usually, when I begin to question college — its reason for existence, my role within it, etc. — I think about “Accepted,” the teen comedy film that came out a few years ago. If you haven’t happened to catch one of its repeated airings on various cable networks, it’s a movie that essentially mocks the entire higher education system.

The National Day of Education is coming up this Thursday, March 1. Students from all across the country will converge in their respective cities and towns to participate in a day of direct actions targeted toward the severely broken state of our current education system.

Winter break: a time for overdosing on holiday food, getting into senseless arguments with relatives and zoning out to premium cable during odd hours of the day. Although my winter break consisted of all of these things, as I rode back to D.C. on Megabus, I also realized that my time off from college life had actually served a deeper, more important purpose—one that involved reexamining opportunity distribution as well as the value of the working class in our modern culture.

I fear for my future. I never predicted I would feel this way, with this much intensity, this early in the game. I am afraid, overwhelmed and ultimately angry. Slowly and painfully, my visions for my future are being dismantled as I grow more aware of the reality of my financial situation, as a student trying to pursue an education in America.

I’ve been on campus for over a month now. I like to think I’ve gotten a good sense of the place. From what I’ve seen so far — in cigarette-circle conversations as well as in eavesdropped discussions in the Mud Box — I’ve come to realize that the “politically active” label given to us is actually a valid one.

About three months ago, after tossing my cap into the air along with the rest of my graduating class, I remember having this strange feeling. Although I was happy to be finished with the tedium of high school — with its irritating bell schedule and all-too-common superficiality — I felt an underlying uncertainty constantly tugging at the strings of my happiness.
