Prospective college students chose New York University for the third consecutive year as their "dream college," according to a survey by the Princeton Review. Although AU is not always their first choice, several students said the university's proximity to Capitol Hill, Library of Congress, international embassies and other resources made it a good place to spend their undergraduate years.

Plans for construction on the McKinley building received the go-ahead from the Zoning Commission of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3D on March 15. Although AU submitted its 10-year Campus Plan in 2001, renovation and expansion of the McKinley building required special permission from the Zoning Commission because it was not included in the initial proposal for the tenure, ANC 3D Commissioner Alma Gates said.

Leaders of the United Methodist Church gave Southern Methodist University permission last Thursday to host a library complex and institute for President George W. Bush. Although SMU President Gerald Turner said he was grateful for the vote, some SMU professors voiced disapproval of the complex, the Dallas Morning News reported. Some AU students also disapproved of the library.

A judge at the Drug Enforcement Administration ruled that a University of Massachusetts professor should be permitted to grow research-grade marijuana, a press release by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies reported last week, according to The Washington Post. Several AU professors and students said the government should support such research plans as long as the use of the crop is monitored.

The FBI is investigating an alleged hate crime against three Palestinian students Jan. 20 at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., according to The Washington Post. Palestinian students at AU said they have suffered from anti-Palestinian sentiment on campus as well.

The D.C. Council held a hearing Thursday to discuss legislation barring minors from clubs that serve alcohol, prompted by the killing of a 17-year-old girl Jan. 20 at a U Street club, according to The Washington Post. Although several AU students said they feel safe in D.C., they think clubs - as well as students - should take more precautions.
