AUSG holds its fall 2026 election with 15 percent student turnout

Student body votes on undergraduate council and senate positions

Last week, American University students voted on representation for undergraduate council positions and class senate positions as a part of Student Government.

Four positions were left unfilled following the election, including the School of Education treasurer and secretary, the College of Arts and Sciences secretary and one class of 2027 senator position, out of 15 total open positions.

A total of 970 students cast their ballots this election, a decrease from spring 2026, where 1,212 students voted. Students were able to rank their candidate choices, resulting in some split votes.

Zuriel Nyamutsaka and Gabby Sutton won the two open senate positions for the class of 2030. With 12 total candidates, Nyamutsaka and Sutton managed victory in the most competitive race of the election.

The winning candidates ran on similar platforms of listening to student concerns, with Sutton emphasizing the University’s location means that “we are at the heart of representation and advocacy and [she’s] here to spread those values to AU,” Sutton said in her campaign statement.
