BREAKING: Kogod Dean Dave Marchick to be Interim University President for two years

Provost Vicky Wilkins and Bronté Burleigh-Jones, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, will each take on the title of Executive Vice President

Dave Marchick will extend his tenure as interim American University president for the next two years, a move which the American University Board of Trustees announced in a university-wide email on Sept. 17.

Charles Lydecker, chair of the Board of Trustees, explained the decision for Marchick to continue the role was to ensure “stability” amidst “the dramatic amount of change” within the higher education sector.

“We are grateful to Dave for the energy, steady leadership and care he brings to this role,” Lydecker wrote.

The email explained that the Board of Trustee’s strategic plan, in which Marchick plays a role,  will continue beyond the current academic year. The search for a new president is expected to launch in fall 2027 and conclude by summer 2028.

“The Board’s decision provides continuity and stability as American University advances the work underway across the institution,” Interim Vice President of Marketing and Communications Katya Popova wrote in a statement to The Eagle. “For students and faculty, it means the university can continue moving forward on its strategic priorities without the disruption of an immediate presidential transition.”

Marchick served as the dean for the Kogod School of Business for four years before former University President Jonathan Alger stepped down after two years, ultimately incurring Marchick’s appointment as interim president.

“I am humbled by the trust the Board of Trustees has shown in me and look forward to working with all of you to take this university to the next level,” Marchick wrote in a later email to students. “I believe deeply in American University, its people and mission, and I am committed to helping AU reach its potential.”

The board made the unanimous decision to extend Marchick’s term, Lydecker wrote.

Marchick and the Board of Trustees have already implemented leadership adjustments as part of their strategic plan, including the role of executive vice president, which is now being shared between Provost Vicky Wilkins and Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Bronté Burleigh-Jones.

During a “challenging environment” for universities, Marchick wrote in his email, he and the board of trustees will emphasize “real-world learning, internships, and opportunities for students to conduct research alongside faculty members.”

Additionally in Lydecker’s email, junior School of Public Affairs and School of Communications student Avery Field was announced as the University’s student trustee-elect.

Marchick called for greater student and staff involvement, highlighting communication and accountability as goals. A link to a form was sent out to students and staff to submit feedback.

“American University’s future will be shaped not only by strategy and structure, but by the daily work and shared commitment of this community. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving alongside you, and I look forward to the work ahead,” Marchick wrote.
