Rae Sremmurd to perform in Bender Arena tonight

Rae Sremmurd will take the stage in Bender Arena tonight to showcase its aggressive, upbeat rap style and addictive sound. The up-and-coming superstars will visit AU as part of The Verge Campus Tour, which brings emerging artists and bands to college campuses every year.

The hip-hop duo is comprised of Tupelo, Miss. natives and brothers Khalif "Swae Lee" Brown and Aaquil "Slim Jimmy" Brown. The group’s first album, “SremmLife,” is packed with catchy, hook heavy songs featuring beats produced by Mike WiLL Made-it and features the group’s distinctive rap style that makes listeners want to dance.

The Khalif brothers dropped their most famous single, “No Type,” last September and released its debut album “SremmLife” in January 2015. The album lived up to the energy fans expected after the group’s first few singles, “We,” and “No Type.” To Rae Sremmurd, the term “Sremmlife” is more than just an album title, it’s a way of life. The brothers describe the term as a movement they started a long time ago in their hometown.

The group’s name spells “Drummer’s Ear” backwards— a nod to the duo’s record label, EarDrummers Entertainment. Before signing to the label in 2014, the brothers performed as Dem Outta St8 Boyz, first at local parties in Mississippi and then on Black Entertainment Television’s hip-hop show “106 and Park.” Since childhood, Swae and Jimmy have used music as a means of escape from their difficult upbringing in one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods of Mississippi.

Rae Sremmurd will perform in Bender Arena on Oct. 22. The show is free with a valid AU ID. Guests may also bring a +1. Admittance will be on a first come first serve basis.
